Jubilee Display: Visiting Monarchs to Worcester Cathedral Through the Ages

As part of our Jubilee commemoration, you can find a display in the South West Nave of a selection of the Kings and Queens that have visited the Cathedral over the years.

From King Stephen, who visited in 1138, 1139, 1140 and again in 1141, to King Henry II and his wife Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine who had a ceremony here at Easter 1158, and of course King John, who visited on several occasions including in 1205, 1207 and 1214, finally wishing to be buried here. His son Henry III visited the Cathedral in 1218.

Prince Llewelyn of Wales married Lady Eleanor de Montfort at the Cathedral’s entrance in the presence of the Kings of England and Scotland, together with a huge gathering of nobles in October 1278.

King Edward I came to Worcester in 1277, Henry IV in 1401 and 1405, Queen Elizabeth I visited in August 1575, King Charles I is said to have visited in 1644, King James II in 1687 and King George III, his wife and some of his daughters (Princess Charlotte, Princess Augusta and Princess Elizabeth) visited Worcester in August 1788 for a holiday and to attend the Three Choirs Festival.

And we have of course been visited by more recent member of the Royal Family, including Her Majesty The Queen on several occasions, most recently in July 2012.
