The Future

The Cathedral has stood the test of time for more than 1,000 years.  It is the responsibility of our generation to lay the foundation for the next 1,000 years.

The Music

"Having spent my life, with absences, in the shadow of the Cathedral, having been born close to it and having come back as a truant to die under its shadow, nothing would give me greater happiness than to know that its future improvement was assured".  Edward Elgar 1857 - 1934

The Worcester Appeal for Music and Light

The Cathedral is delighted to announce the achievement of the first of the aims of this £5 million Appeal, and that the wonderful new Quire Organ is in place and was played to great acclaim at this year’s Three Choirs Festival.  This organ brings together wonderful age old craftsmanship and twenty first century electronic and acoustic technology, appropriate to Worcester ’s place as a world renowned centre of musical excellence.  Generous donations have already raised £3 million and the autumn brings  the beginning of the next phase -  the creation of a Choral Endowment to secure the other element of music which is so important to the life of the Cathedral and the community that it supports.

Choral Endowments

organ_case.JPGUnlike many cathedrals in Britain , Worcester does not have the benefit of established investments, bursaries or endowments, and therefore wishes to establish a Music Endowment.  September 2007 saw the inauguration of the Girls Choir, bringing into the Cathedral girls from across the county, giving greater scope for the four choirs of the Cathedral to take their music across the Diocese. A place in the Choir gives 36 young people the chance of a musical education second to none, builds confidence in themselves for the future and enables them to meet with other musicians, both here and abroad.

Lighting

The Cathedral is planning to install innovative, high technology lighting,  enhancing l the soaring interior of the building, and to provide an artistic ambience for productions of music, theatre and dance. “The Worcester Pilgrim” was performed to great acclaim in the body of the Cathedral in 2007, and it is hoped for more such productions. The programme of lighting has commenced in the North and South aisles and the remainder is at the design stage.

How can you become involved?

There are many ways that you can support us.  You can make a single donation by cash, cheque or CAF voucher, or pledge a gift over a period of time, such as five years.  If you are a UK tax payer, you may also take advantage of the Gift Aid Scheme whereby the Cathedral would be able to reclaim the tax paid to the government.  Currently this amounts to 28p for every £ donated.  You may also make a gift of shares or property or leave a legacy.

There are also a number of giving (or recognition) opportunities to which you can give, such as Sponsor a Pipe or Endow a Day of Music.

For further information on how you might support the Cathedral please contact the Developoment Manager on 01905 732912, or e-mail LucindaWray-wear@worcestercathedral.org.uk. Alternatively, you can write to the Development Manager at The Chapter Office, 8 College Yard, Worcester, WR1 2L
