About Us

The Cathedral Church of Christ & the Blessed Mary the Virgin, of Worcester is the mother church of the Diocese of Worcester and the seat of the Bishop of Worcester. 

The Chapter

 

The Chapter oversees the day-to-day life of the cathedral and the staff appointed by them. It is responsible for the strategic direction of the cathedral's mission and ministry and monitors the results.

The Dean chairs the Cathedral Chapter and has overall responsibility for the cathedral's life, mission and ministry. He also represents the cathedral in the city, the county and holds responsibilities in the wider diocese.

is the chief administrative officer and as such is responsible for the day-to-day management of the cathedral and staff. It is the Steward's task to put into action the strategy set by the Chapter. The Departments that perform the Cathedral operations all report to the Steward.

A Reader in the Church of England who is authorised to lead worship, to preach and to administer communion.

This is the key advisory body, established to support the work of the Chapter. It provides a sounding board as well as expert guidance to assist the Chapter in its decisions. It has the informal role of watchdog ensuring that the cathedral fulfils its legal responsibilities.

 

The Council is made up of the following groups:

 

  • John Smith (Chairman)
  • The Bishop of Worcester
  • The Dean of Worcester
  • Eight members appointed by the Bishop
  • Two members appointed from the Chapter
  • Two members appointed by the College of Canons
  • Two members appointed by the cathedral community

 

The College of Canons

 

Canons_in_Chapter_house.jpgThis body brings opinion and questions from across Worcestershire and the Metropolitan District of Dudley. It also enables open communication between the cathedral and the diocese.

The Cathedral Community Committee

 

 

 

This committee is chaired by the Dean and made up of representatives from all the different cathedral groups. It brings opinions, suggestions and questions to the Chapter from the membership of the cathedral.
