Sponsor a Stone on Edgar Tower
The Edgar Tower is one of Worcester's oldest structures. †This impressive gateway was built in the early 1200's by order of King John, who was buried in Worcester Cathedral 800 years ago in 1216, and whose legacy lives on in Magna Carta. †The gatehouse was then rebuilt for the Priory between 1300 and 1335, remodelled and crenulated in 1369 and restored in the late 19th Century. †The valuted thoroughfare runs from east to west below terracotta figures of Kings, Queens and Bishops, including that of King Edgar, whose figure looks down on those passing through. †It still houses what is possibly the oldest schoolroom in continuous use in England.
The Edgar Tower is a building of national importance, listed as Grade 1, scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, and listed in Historic England's 'Heritage at Risk' register.
We need to raise £250,000 to complete the restoration. †Please help us by sponsoring a stone from just £50, which will be engraved in your chosen initials. †You will also receive a certificate containing your personal dedication of up to 30 words. †Every donation and dedication is recorded in a Commemorative Ledger and stored in our historic library.
Please click here for the Edgar Tower leaflet and donation form. †To discuss your gift, please telephone us on 01905 732912/732902 or email email@example.com
