MORE INFORMATION
A touch of good old-fashioned Hollywood glamour descended on the magnificent location of Worcester Cathedral in the summer of 2009, when an exclusive Costume Exhibition was opened to the public.
"STARSTRUCK", featured a dazzling array of up to 100 costumes worn by major stars in a series of BAFTA and Oscar award-winning films, as well as TV & theatre productions. These included costumes worn by Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp, Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Madonna, Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow and Heath Ledger to name just a few! Worcester Cathedral's Event Manager Debbie Liggins worked with the curator Kate Bailey who works extensively for the V&A and specializes in the production of theatrical exhibitions throughout the country. For Kate, this three-week exhibition was the culmination of months of work in researching costumes, contacting their designers, tracking down the authentic articles and carefully displaying them for the exhibition.
The Dean of Worcester, Peter Atkinson said, "It's a truly majestic backdrop for these beautiful costumes. There will be over eighty costumes, including a dramatic tableaux, incorporating props to give a really theatrical feel."
The exhibition's aim was to raise money for the Cathedral, its mission and outreach.
The costumes have been sourced from Cosprop, Angels the RSC and The BBC (Robin Hood), the first two being established costumiers to Hollywood & the film business.
The exhibits were theatrically displayed in the nave of the Cathedral in themed sections incorporating a catwalk to showcase the particularly glamorous costumes. Each costume was on a mannequin, professionally dressed by Cosprop staff. Simon Swift of Light Unlimited designed a lighting system on a 45-minute loop linked to a soundtrack of music from the films to bring the exhibits to life.
The underlying message of the exhibition was the process that the costumier goes through to arrive at the costume which differs for film, theatre & TV and the importance of the costume to an actor when assuming their role.
We had costumes that appealed to all ages from Superheroes (Johnny Depp's outfit from Pirates of the Caribbean) and historic (Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth I and Rufus Sewell in Charles II) to Shakespeare (Richard Burton in Henry V & Ben Kingsley in Othello), iconic (Helen Mirren in The Queen & Meryl Streep in French Lieutenant's Woman) and film couture (Elizabeth Taylor in Young Toscanini and Demi Moore in Flawless).
The RCS Collection contributed a number of costumes including those worn by Ben Kingsley (Othello, 1985), Helen Mirren (Macbeth, 1974) and Vanessa Redgrave (The Taming of the Shrews, 1961).
